Are helmets required at Mt Hood Meadows?
We always recommend wearing a helmet, which can be rented in our Rossignol Rental Center or purchased at the Outer Limits Sports Shop. They are warm, waterproof and provide protection.
Is Mt. Hood good for snowboarding?
The higher terrain on the mountain is spectacular, for its skiing, snowboarding and epic views when conditions are clear and sunny. Mount Hood Meadows offers skiers and snowboarders a complete Oregon experience.
Is Mt. Hood a hard climb?
Hood requires technical climbing skills and experience. Even on the S Side route, the upper portion of the climb is steep (45°) snow and ice, with high consequence runout. A slip is often fatal. In certain conditions, the climb can seem relatively simple.

What can I bring to Mt Hood?
Route selection and conditions may require more gear.

Can you snowboard year round at Mt. Hood?
Skiers in the Northwest who don’t want winter to end are in luck—Mt. Hood is one of the few places where slopes are usually open regardless of season. In fact, the longest ski and snowboard season in North America is at Mt. Hood’s Timberline.
Do you need crampons for Mt. Hood?
Fitness is the main requirement—see below for specifics. Experience using crampons, proper use of the ice axe for ascending, descending, self-belay and self-arrest are all required skills for Mt. Hood. You may also need to have had experience or training in moving as a rope team.
Do you need climbing gear for Mt. Hood?
While Mount Hood is not a highly technical endeavor, it does require some mountaineering skills and equipment. Climbing conditions are best in the spring and early summer, roughly April to June, depending on the year.
Can you ski on Mount Hood?
Hood is home to three incredible and diverse ski resorts. Timberline Lodge and Ski Area is the only ski-in, ski-out lodge in the state, Mt. Hood Skibowl has the largest night skiing terrain in the United States and Mt. Hood Meadows offers more than 2,150 acres of skiing.
Where do pro snowboarders live?
Seattle is a fantastic city for skiers and snowboarders to live in due to its proximity to some of the most powder-laden resorts in the US. If you’re a fan of riding seriously deep powder then there are a number of world famous resorts within a relatively short drive.
Do you need to rope up for Mt. Hood?
Mt Hood is usually climbed by experienced parties without using a rope. When a party has beginners, a rope travel is often used, but this may be to provide psychological security to the newbie, or “liability” protection to the leader: remember, roped travel on steep snow if you do not place pickets.
